4. Try the “forgotten password” trick
If you suspect an anonymous profile belongs to someone you know, the “forgot password” feature on some social media platforms can help you verify it through part of the linked email address.
Here we use Instagram as an example to show you how it works:
- Open the Instagram app. Go to your profile and tap the username at the top left.
- Then tap Add Instagram account > Log into existing account to open the log-in screen.
- Next, tap Forgotten Password? and select Search by mobile number instead at the bottom. Enter the phone number and click Continue.
- If an Instagram account is linked to this number, you’ll be presented with login options, including email. At this point, you’ll only see the name of the email provider (like Gmail) or the first letter of the provider’s name. To view more details, you’ll need to click Continue, and a message will then pop up saying “We’ve sent an email to XXX with a link to get back into your account.” And there you have it, your hint.
