What is an IP address?
An IP address, short for Internet Protocol address, serves as a unique identifier for devices on the Internet or local network. Similar to a home or business address, an IP address allows your devices to be identified by others connected on the web via the Internet protocol.
IPv4 and IPv6
IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) is the most common version of the IP address. The IPv4 address is 32 bits long and is represented by 4 numbers separated by dots in the range of 0-255. For example:
Initially, the 32-bit address space provided almost 4.3 billion unique addresses, which were deemed sufficient back in 1980. However, with the Internet’s global expansion, unique IPv4 addresses became scarce, prompting the development of IPv6 to address the capacity challenge.
IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) is a newer version of IP that uses 128-bit addresses. It’s formatted as eight groups of four hexadecimal numbers separated by colons. For example:
IPv6’s vast address space allows for approximately 340 undecillion (which is 340 followed by 36 zeros) addresses, ensuring that IPv6 addresses will not be exhausted anytime soon.
IP Address Lookup – Check Location of Public IP
An IP address lookup enables you to access the associated information of an IP, such as the city, state, zip code, country, and Internet service provider (ISP). However, it won’t disclose precise details such as personally identifiable information or exact location like street or apartment number.
Is it legal to trace an IP address?
Yes, it’s legal to trace an IP address as long as it’s not used for criminal purposes. IP addresses are available publicly, as they’re part of the Internet, a public network. In fact, your IP address is traced each time you use the Internet. However, it’s impossible for someone to track your exact location solely based on the IP address.
How accurate is IP address lookup?
The results from an IP address search are a collection of data from multiple IP location databases. There are more than a dozen IP location database providers, and each database reports differently, which may lead to the inaccuracy of location information.
The database we employ boasts a high accuracy rate: 99.8% on a country level, 80% on a state level, and 68% on a city level within a 50-kilometer radius in the US. Don’t fall for any IP address tool that claims to be 100% accurate, as no tool can guarantee absolute precision.
Common use cases for IP-based geolocation
Customized offerings
You can deliver personalized offers to users based on their geographical location. For example, users in one area may receive offerings for specific physical products while those in distant locations may be offered virtual products.
Improved user experience
You can create a localized browsing experience for your visitors by directing them to a language-specific page and displaying local business hours and product prices in local currencies.
Enhanced security
You can identify and block potential hacking attempts by tracing the IP addresses or AS numbers and implementing firewall restrictions to safeguard your website.
